Francine Simonin / Musique des Balkans

Throughout the month of March will be held the exhibition Ana notes sur notes, an exhibition presenting the works of 21 visual artists, inspired by a single common denominator: composer Ana Sokolović’s music. Visitors will receive a catalogue showcasing the artist’s works, courtesy of the SMCQ (quantities limited). The opening will be Friday, March 9th from 5-7pm.

Svadba is a new opera by Ana Sokolović for the Queen of Puddings Music Theatre. The opera is scored for six female opera singers, a cappella, and sung in Serbian with English surtitles.

The world premiere took place in june 2011 at the Berkeley Street Theatre Downstairs (Toronto) and proved a great critical success.

The composer is working with choreographer and dancer Marc Boivin on a new creation inspired by the texts of Italian author and playwright Angelo Beolco and the characters of the commedia dell’Arte. The piece will bring together Boivin and the Bozzini Quartet on stage. The world premiere is expected to take place in 2012. More to come!

In 2009, Ana Sokolović took the spotlight at the National Arts Centre with the presentation of the NAC Award. She was commissioned to create three new music works for the NAC Orchestra. She is currently working on his first work as part of a residency program.
