Ana Sokolović lands a rare commission from the Canadian Opera Company

anaetmichelmarcMarch 2015 - Alexander Neef, General Director of the Canadian Opera Company, announced the commission of a new opera for its mainstage by Ana Sokolović. Titled La Reine-Garçon, the libretto is by Quebec playwright Michel Marc Bouchard and based on his play of the same name. Inspired by Queen Christina of Sweden who ruled the country in the 17th century before abdicating her throne at the age of 27, La Reine-Garçonis currently in development and is scheduled to have its world premiere in the COC’s 2019/2020 season.

Ana Sokolović’s opera set for Aix festival

March 2015 – From 3 to 16 July 2015,  Ana Sokolovic’s a cappella opera SVADBA-WEDDING will be presented, in a new production, at the prestigious 2015 Aix-en-Provence festival in France, under conductor Dairine Ni Mheadhra and with stage direction by Ted Huffman and Zack Winokur. The Festival d’Aix-en-Provence’s 2015 season of wide-ranging events take place in a number of historical venues, many of them open-air, in and around the ancient Provençal city of Aix.

Creation workshop under the tutelage of Ana Sokolović

March 2015 - From August 2 to 15 2015 at Orford Arts Center, Ana Sokolović and composer Jean Lesage offer a unique 2-week workshop made to order for young composers just starting out in their career. The summer 2015 course will be divided in two parts, one theoretical and the other practical, and will have as main axis the writing for small ensembles. Students will benefit from working closely with the new contemporary music performance course under the direction of Véronique Lacroix. All works created during this course will be recorded and many of them will be presented in concerts at the Academy. In addition, short works for solo instruments, composed on site, will be created by students of various interpretation courses.

A new work by Ana Sokolović performed three times rather than once!

March 2014 - The captivating vocal world of Musica Intima meets the rich instrumental textures of Turning Point Ensemble and Nu:BC Collective in a serie of three concerts at the Chan Centre’s intimate Telus Studio Theatre. Three works of Sokolovic, including a premiere written for the Turning Point Ensemble with the long captivating title: « …and I need a room to receive five thousand people with raised glasses » or « What a wonderful day, the birds are singing Alleluia » will be performed.

American Premiere of SVADBA-WEDDING

February 2013 -  Opera Philadelphia launches OPERA IN THE CITY series with the American Premiere of composer Ana Sokolović’s renowned SVADBA-WEDDING, in collaboration with FringeArts. Commissioned and produced by Queen of Puddings Music Theatre in Toronto, SVADBA-WEDDING is a raucous and intoxicating a cappella tour de force for six female opera singers.

Ana Sokolovic received the Jan V. Matejcek New Classical Music Award

November, 2012 - SOCAN proudly saluted its members’ outstanding achievements at the 23rd annual SOCAN Awards, held Nov. 21, 2012. Ana Sokolović received the Jan V. Matejcek New Classical Music Award. Sokolovic noted that “this is to me a concrete proof of the love I have found in Quebec society since I moved here 20 years ago.”  She went on to urge the teaching of music and voice to children from elementary school. “Art spurs the imagination, and imagination moves society forward.”

Dora Award for Outstanding New Opera goes to Ana Sokolovic’s SVADBA-WEDDING‏

June, 2012 - Celebrated composer Ana Sokolović took the Dora for Outstanding New Musical/Opera for SVADBA-WEDDING! Commissioned by Queen of Puddings Music Theatre and premiered in June 2011 to great critical acclaim, SVADBA- WEDDING was nominated for 6 Dora Mavor Moore Awards. The opera will be touring nationally and internationally in 2012-13.

Ana Sokolović recognized as a « national treasure »

April, 2012 - This April the Homage Series reaches its summit in celebrating composer Ana Sokolović. Recognition has been garnered in the artistic, political and educational milieus. On April 17th, Christine St-Pierre, Minister of Culture, Communications and the Status of Women will issue a statement to the National Assembly, requesting that Ana Sokolović be recognized as a “national treasure”.

September, 2011 - SMCQ’s Artistic Committee has unanimously decided to devote the third Homage Series to Ana Sokolović, for the scope, diversity, and quality of her work; for her original artistic approach, her dynamism, and her credibility before the most renowned institutions, and; for her sensibility to audiences of all ages. The whole cultural milieu is invited to promote and acknowledge this key figure in today’s music by integrating one of her works to their 2011/2012 programming or by starting a project around her work.
